Understanding FFP Ratings

EN 149 classifies filtering facepiece respirators into three protection levels based on filtration efficiency and inward leakage:

FFP1 (Low Protection)

Filtration: ≥80% of airborne particles

Use: Nuisance dust, non-toxic particles (e.g., construction dust, pollen)

Max Exposure: 4x Occupational Exposure Limit (OEL)

FFP2 (Medium Protection)

Filtration: ≥94% of airborne particles

Use: Solid & liquid aerosols, wood dust, metal fumes, silica

Max Exposure: 10x OEL (Equivalent to N95 in US)

FFP3 (High Protection)

Filtration: ≥99% of airborne particles

When to Replace Your Respirator

  • Disposable Masks: After each shift or when breathing becomes difficult (clogged filter)
  • Valved Respirators: When elastic straps lose tension or valve flap is damaged
  • Cartridge Filters: Replace per manufacturer schedule or when you detect odors/breakthrough
  • Damaged Seal: Any tears, cracks, or deformation requires immediate replacement
  • Storage: Store in clean, dry environment; UV exposure degrades elastic over time

Fit Testing & Compliance

South African Regulations: Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHS Act 85 of 1993) requires employers to provide appropriate respiratory protection and conduct fit testing where seal integrity is critical.

Fit Test Methods:

  • Qualitative: Taste/smell test (saccharin, bitter solution) – suitable for most FFP2/FFP3 masks
  • Quantitative: PortaCount machine measures leakage – required for high-risk environments (asbestos, TB)
  • User Seal Check: Always perform before each use (positive/negative pressure test)

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using FFP1 masks for toxic fumes or fine particles (under-protection)
  • Facial hair preventing proper seal (beards, stubble reduce effectiveness by 50%+)
  • Reusing disposable masks beyond recommended hours (filtration degrades)
  • Incorrectly donning respirator (nose clip not pinched, straps too loose)
