Abrasives Selection Guide: Discs, Belts & Wheels

Selecting the right abrasive maximizes material removal rates, surface finish quality, and tool life. This guide covers grit selection, backing materials, and application-specific abrasives.

Understanding Grit Sizes

Grit size refers to the number of abrasive particles per square inch. Lower numbers = coarser grit (aggressive material removal); higher numbers = finer grit (smooth finishing).

Coarse (24-60 Grit)

Use: Heavy stock removal, rust stripping, weld grinding, paint removal

Medium (80-120 Grit)

Use: General-purpose sanding, edge deburring, surface preparation before painting

Fine (150-240 Grit)

Use: Final sanding before finishing, light deburring, inter-coat sanding

Very Fine (320-600+ Grit)

Use: Polishing, automotive clear coat prep, fine woodworking, metal finishing

Weld Grinding

Stainless Steel Finishing

Safety & Best Practices

  • Always check disc RPM rating vs. tool speed (exceeding RPM can cause disc failure)
  • Wear safety glasses, face shield, and hearing protection during grinding operations
  • Replace discs immediately if cracked, worn to center hole, or vibrating excessively
  • Use proper backing pads for fiber discs (medium for flat surfaces, soft for contours)
  • Apply consistent, moderate pressure — excessive force reduces cutting efficiency and disc life
  • Allow new disc to run at full speed for 1 minute before use (safety break-in period)
